Electronic cruise control for the Scrambler 400
As much as I like riding on twisty roads, I also enjoy riding on the highway. But the pain with long highway stretches is that I have to keep the throttle pinned for extended periods, causing discomfort. My scrambler 400 does not come with cruise control, even though it has ride by wire.
There are two aftermarket options to solve this; a throttle lock and an electronic cruise control.
A throttle lock is simply a crude mechanism which locks your throttle into one position, however I find this quite sketchy and dangerous since you manually have to disengage the lock.
On the other hand, an electronic cruise control directly taps into the bike’s throttle position sensor to keep the throttle “open”. The added benefit is that it can be disengaged through multiple ways.
I opted for bykr.co’s cruise control while it was being developed for the scrambler 400, so I got it for ₹11,000. The best part is, it has more features compared to Veridian cruise.
Positives
It works flawlessly. I have zero complaints on how it could be improved. I press a button and the cruise control is enabled. I can increase or decrease speed in increments of 5kph. And also save the last cruise speed which was set. To cancel the cruise is very easy, either I gently tap the front or rear brakes, press the clutch, or simply press the cancel button. The system is also able to manage the engine speed to maintain the speed that you have set, for eg., if I set the speed to 80kph and I have started to climb an overpass, normally the speed would decrease unless I give it a bit more throttle. The cruise control takes care of this as well by automatically managing the engine speed so that you’re always at the speed that you have set.
Negatives
Since I had got the prototype unit early on, the harness wasn’t very well made, the owner quickly sent me a replacement and all has been good since. A nitpick that I have is that the switch casing quality could be slightly better since it’s 3D printed, it feels a bit rough.
